Risk Factors for Endometriosis

Age – Women typically suffer from endometriosis between puberty (onset of menstrual cycle) and menopause (cessation of menstrual cycle).

Family history – Women with a mother or sister with endometriosis are 7 times more likely than the general population to also suffer from endometrosis.6

Menstrual history  – Women who started menstruating before the age of 12, whose menstrual cycles are less than 28 days, or whose menstrual blood flow lasts longer than 7 days each month are more likely to develop endometriosis

Pregnancy history – Women who have never been pregnant or who become pregnant for the first time late in life are more likely to suffer from endometriosis

Uterine anatomy – Abnormalities in the shape of the uterus or vagina that restrict the passage of menstrual blood increase the risk for endometriosis
