Signs & Symptoms of Menopause

Irregular Menstrual Periods: Periods which deviate from your normal cycle such as  missed periods, periods which are infrequent and not on schedule, last only for only a day or two, or are unusually heavy and long lasting .

Hot Flashes: A warm sensation caused by vasodilatation (expansion) of the blood vessels affecting the neck, face and upper body that usually are typically combined with perspiration and a feeling of faintness. Often times you can observe a pink or red flush or light rash in those areas.

Night Sweats: Waking up in the middle of the night feeling excessively hot and profusely perspiring sometimes followed by chills.

Vaginal Dryness: The reduction of vaginal fluid production due to the lack of estrogen that allows for comfortable sexual intercourse

Disturbed Sleep Patterns: The inability to fall asleep and/or to stay asleep, early morning wakening

Significant Mood Changes: Irritability, anxiety, depression, diminished sexual interest

Restlessness: The feeling that there is something that needs to be done, the need to be walking or otherwise moving, or the feeling that something is forgotten for no apparent reason

Atypical Signs and Symptoms:

Some women may experience:

  • Joint Pain
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Stress incontinence as a result of sagging pelvic structures
  • Reduction in Bone Mass leading to fragile bones and osteoporosis
  • Emotional instability
  • Irritability and Depression

Some woman may grieve the loss of the ability to reproduce, a loss of femininity, or the feeling of a loss of sexual attractiveness while others welcome the end of menstrual cycles, birth control pills, and not having to worry about pregnancy.
