General symptoms of vaginal infections (vaginitis)

  • Vaginal discharge

Specific symptoms related to the different types of vaginitis

Bacterial vaginosis

  • Unpleasant vaginal odor (may be described as ‘musty’ or ‘fishy’)
  • Off-white or gray vaginal discharge

Candida vaginitis

  • Thick, white vaginal discharge (may be described as ‘curdy’ or ‘like cottage cheese’)
  • Vaginal itching (sometimes intense) and vaginal pain/burning

Trichomonas vaginitis

  • Yellow-green frothy vaginal discharge with unpleasant odor; large amount of vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal burning and pain with intercourse
