Treatment of Depression

Once depression is diagnosed, mental health professionals use a variety of treatment methods. The first step is to rule out any other underlying mental illness. Once this is done, patients are treated with a multidisciplinary approach, which includes:

  • Cognitive Therapy – Also known as psychotherapy, this treatment helps train patients to change their behavior and negative responses associated with depression. Psychotherapy can help educate women regarding potential symptoms. This can help women to deal with these symptoms when they happen.
  • Medication – Antidepressants are the typical drug of choice for depression. This type of medication works to regulate chemicals in the brain, known as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Research has shown that these chemicals are responsible for regulating mood.
