Avoiding Unnecessary Weight Gain During Your Pregnancy

Chances are you have heard at least one pregnant woman say something along the lines that they can eat whatever they want whenever they want because they are eating for two. While doctors used to tell mothers to be that they needed to eat for two this information is now considered outdated, currently doctors only want women to gain a certain amount of weight during their pregnancy. Something to keep in mind with the unnecessary weight gain is that the more weight you put on the harder it is to take off.

Therefore, if you are looking to avoid unnecessary weight gain during your pregnancy here are some useful tips that you can follow.

Tip One: Follow A Healthy Diet
One of the worst things that you can do is to binge on foods that are considered bad for you. For example, you do not want to eat greasy cheeseburgers, fries, or even ice cream for every meal. The reason you want to avoid these foods is that they are full of what health care professionals refer to as empty calories, meaning the calories really don’t do anything for you. Instead, you want to focus on foods that will help you to keep your weight in check, as well as nourish your body. Good foods to eat include plenty of fruits and vegetables, as well as lean meats. Good carbs, which are whole grain breads and brown rice, are more filling than bad carbs, such as white bread and rice.

Tip Two: Moderation Is Key
Many women during the course of their pregnancy are going to have some kind of craving, whether it is for pickles and ice cream or chips and dip. Now some women might try to ignore these cravings, as they don’t want to eat sugary or fatty foods as they don’t want to gain the extra weight, but that doesn’t mean you have to ignore these cravings. There is nothing wrong with having a bowl of ice cream or a serving or two of chips. The important thing to remember is moderation. Eating fatty or sugary foods in moderation is fine because your body has time to burn off those excess calories.

Tip Three: Dealing With The Munchies
No matter if you are pregnant or not you have probably had a case or two of the munchies, where you have just wanted to sit and eat even though you were not particularly hungry. For those of you trying to avoid unnecessary weight gain in pregnancy this can be a nightmare, but luckily, there is a way to handle this. Rather than raiding your pantry and eating an entire box of salty crackers opt for some dried fruit and a glass of water. Drinking the water before you eat the fruit can help you get full faster, and the fruit will keep you feeling full for awhile. As an added benefit, the dried fruit can help prevent constipation, which is quite common in pregnancy.

Tip Four: Stay Active
Part of keeping those unwanted pounds off is to stay active, sitting around doing nothing does not aid in your body using the calories you are bringing in. Staying active while you are pregnant does not mean you have to go out and start a rigorous exercise program, which can actually be quite dangerous during pregnancy. Being active can be as simple as walking around the block a few times or you can partake in an exercise program designed for pregnant women.
